This quilt square is a painting I would have liked to give Rene. It is an expression of the fond memories I have of him: the light in his eyes when he laughed, the joy in his smile that peeked out from between his beard and moustache, and abiding gentleness. Rene was my supervisor. When I used to arrive at his house with my client's artwork he would make us each a cup of tea. His dog would bark a greeting and then settle down and listen in. On cold days Rene would light a fire. This square also hold for me a sadness that these can now only be experienced as memories. Laura West |
